How to fix error File system verify or repair failed?

Mac is could not be installed on your computer. File system verify or repair failed. Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again. I am trying to install High Sierra on a 2014 MacBook Pro. El Capitan. I backed it up to a 1 terabyte external hard drive with Time Machine. The installer is running on a loop. I need specific and clear instructions. Not a happy camper right now.
