Can't see files transferred from MacBook Pro to USB drive

My MacBook Pro is almost full, so I decided to transfer large files like videos or audio into my recently purchased 64GB USB drives. In my first attempt, I transferred 21GB of videos to the USB drive, and it was finished after 30 minutes. However, when I open the USB drive, the files are nowhere to be found. Get Info shows 21GB of used space. If I copy the files from my Mac again, the message says the files already exist. I tried to show hidden files to no avail. How can I see the files on the USB drive?

If the transferred files are not showing up on a USB drive, it's likely because they are hidden or the drive has format issues or other problems. I see you've already tried to unhide files, but ensure you're using the correct shortcut: Command + Shift + period.

Besides, you can reformat your external drive on Mac with a native format, such as APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If you plan to use the drive on a Windows PC, use exFAT.

The current format, FAT32, has a 4GB file size limitation, which prevents it from saving single files larger than 4GB. It also lacks advanced features, such as security permissions or journaling.

Here's how to format it:

  1. Open Disk Utility.
  2. Click View > Show All Devices.
  3. Select the physical drive of your USB drive (the topmost level) and click Erase.
  4. Name it.
  5. Choose a proper format.
  6. Select GUID Partition Map as the scheme.
  7. Click Erase.
  8. After it's formatted, retry copying files to it from your Mac.

If it doesn't work, consider returning the USB drives and purchase one from a reputated brand.
