Can I recover data from uninitialized disk and then fix it?

Hello, I'm trying to retrieve data from a WD My Cloud disk that has an EXT format. It is docked and connected via USB to my Mac Pro. Upon turning it on, OS X displays an error message stating that the drive has not been initialized. Will all of the data on this drive be deleted if I initialize it? Since I'm attempting to recover the data, I don't want it erased. In addition, I have "FUSE OSX" installed, an application that is meant to read EXT file systems. I have Mac OS Sierra installed.

You can try third-party data recovery software to recover data from the uninitialized disk on Mac first, and then try some solutions to make the drive usable again.

To retrieve data from the drive that becomes uninitialized on Mac, you will need third-party data recovery software for Mac. iBoysoft Data Recovery for Mac is recommended for its high recovery rate, risk-free environment, Finder-like UI, etc. It scans the selected drive/partition for lost and deleted files, then, you can preview and recover the files found.

After recovering data from uninitialized disk on Mac, you can proceed to fix the drive. In addition to initialize the drive, there are some other remedies you can try:

  • Check the connections
  • Restart Mac
  • Update the driver
  • Run First Aid in Disk Utility
  • Initialize or format the drive
