Help! Move desktop and documents folders from iCloud to Mac

How iCloud was used to store my Desktop Files and Documents folder, which has many subfolders. I want to remove them from iCloud storage and move them back to my MacBook Pro. The several discussions here have several quite different advice on how to accomplish this. I don't want any of these files or directories to disappear. Is all that's required to store them on iCloud to deselect the option? Will my MacBook Pro move them back to my local drive in this way? Upgrade to Catalina, please. Is it better to move the files first or do that first? Please help!

It seems that you have accidentally enabled the Desktop & Documents folders option in iCloud Drive, and it syncs your Mac desktop and documents folders with iCloud. You can disable this feature by heading to the Apple menu > System Settings > tap your name, then select iCloud > iCloud Drive, toggle off Desktop & Documents folders.

When you turn it off, your desktop and documents folders won't go back to their original location, it automatically creates a Desktop and Documents folder containing your data in the Mac home folder called iCloud Drive (Archive). You can manually copy these files back to your Desktop and Documents folders.
