How do I back up to an NTFS external drive on Mac?

I want to create a backup disk image of my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.6.8) and save it to my 1.5TB NTFS external hard drive, which has about 300GB of data. I have Paragon NTFS on my MacBook to write to the NTFS drive. So, how should I proceed with the backup?

Here's how you can create a disk image of your Mac to the NTFS external drive: (Make sure the free space on your NTFS drive is no less than the capacity of your internal hard drive.)

  1. Update your Mac to 10.7 or later to boot into macOS Recovery Mode later.
  2. Shut down your Mac.
  3. Power it on and then immediately press and hold Command + R.
  4. Release the keys when you see the Apple logo.
  5. Click Disk Utility > Continue in the Mac OS X Utilities window.
  6. Connect the external hard drive to your Mac.
  7. Select the volume you want to back up and choose File > New Image > Image from (volume name).
  8. Choose the NTFS external drive as the save location.
  9. Click Save.

If you could update your Mac to macOS 10.13 or later, using a disk cloner like iBoysoft DiskGeeker to clone your internal hard drive to the NTFS disk is much more efficient.
