iMac (2017) Fusion Drive failed - How to recover data?

The Fusion Drive on my 2017 iMac has probably failed. It no longer boots up. When I boot from an external USB, I find only one internal drive labeled "APFS Physical Store disk0s2" in Disk Utility and it's "Not Mounted." I tried to repair it with First Aid, but it failed with the error "An internal error has occurred." I ran "diskutil list" in Terminal and it shows three items:/dev/disk0 (internal, physical): 2TB; /dev/disk1: external, physical): 63.9GB; /dev/disk2 (synthesized): 63.7GB. It seems that there are one internal disk, one external disk and one synthesized disk of the external OS disk. How do I get back my data?

The SSD portion of your Fusion Drive has likely failed, as your Mac only recognizes the 2TB HDD. There's still a chance to get some of your data back from the HDD by following the steps below:

Step 1: Boot from your external USB installer.

Step 2: Download and install iBoysoft Data Recovery for Mac (save it on your external USB rather than on the internal hard drive).

Step 3: Open the app, then click IBoysoft Data Recovery for Mac > Settings/Preferences in the menu bar.

Step 4: Tick the box beside "File type" underneath "Scan lost data by."

Step 5: Select the 2TB HDD and click "Search for Lost Data."

Step 6: Preview the recoverable files.

Step 7: Recover those you want back.
