If you use macOS to encrypt your SanDisk Extreme disk, the generated recovery key also can unlock the drive. But if you lose both two, the only fix that works out is hardware resetting the drive which will erase all data on it.
Whereas if you use other third-party software to encrypt your SanDisk Extreme disk, contact the developer for advice but I guess you will still need a drive erasure at last.
