Although Mac is configured with a shutdown option lying on the Apple menu, which is well within reach of users, it's still possible that this feature misfunctions one day without a clue. Hence, knowing how to turn off a Mac in alternative ways is a must. Luckily, we have a powerful assistant here who can replace the shutdown feature to turn off the Mac, that is, the keyboard.

This post from iBoysoft is gonna tell you how to turn off a Mac using the keyboard. Meanwhile, how to shut down a MacBook Air with a keyboard and no power button will be explored as well. Let's get started then!

Before shutting down the Mac

Typically, the shutdown option located in the Apple menu should activate immediately once you click it, if it freezes or stops working, there must be some disruptive factors. To shut down a Mac correctly, you can learn how to rule out the possible culprits in this section.

First of all, quit all running apps and programs from the Mac background, suspend the downloads, and close working tables or sheets after saving them well. With all work being discontinued, there will be no obstacles during the shutdown process.

Secondly, disconnect all peripherals from your Mac. If you have external hard drives connected to the Mac, it's recommended to manually disconnect them or safely eject them. Or, the shutdown menu may stop working because some apps are using them still.

Thirdly, free up Macintosh HD space as much as you can so the shutdown and reboot time will be shortened greatly. Remove the useless files and rarely-opened apps from the Mac for more available hard drive space, then you'll find the device's performance and running speed are improved on a large scale.

If you have no interest in cleaning junk on Mac on your own, iBoysoft DiskGeeker is a nice option, which scans for all junk bit by bit and sector by sector on the hard drive, then allows you to confirm the useless one for removal!

The Clean Junk feature of iBoysoft DiskGeeker is designed to scan the system drive usually labeled as Macintosh HD, Macintosh HD - Data, macOS, or macOS - Data for redundant data. It can find information and files no longer needed in the system cache, user logs, application cache, downloads, etc.

All you need to do is download it and move your fingers in letting it complete the whole mission:

Step 1: Download iBoysoft DiskGeeker on your Mac.

Step 2: Select a volume from the startup disk usually labeled as macOS - Data, macOS, or Macintosh HD, or Macintosh HD - Data.

Step 3: Click "Clean Junk" from the toolbar.

Step 3: Select a folder from the left panel and select the files/folders you want to delete.

Step 4: Click "Clean" and then click "Ok". You will fail to clean certain files if you don't have permission to do so.
