The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely

I recently upgraded my 2012 MacBook Pro to connect my phone to iTunes. However, the update failed and my Mac now crashes when it is loaded halfway. I booted into macOS Recovery and ran First Aid on all internal partitions. All partitions are fine except Macintosh HD. First Aid reported the error "First Aid process has failed. If possible back up the data on this volume. " The details state “The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely. File system check exit code is 8.” How can I boot my Mac without losing data?

Since the update didn’t succeed, the OS on your Mac isn’t complete, making it unable to boot up. What you should do now is to reinstall macOS, replacing the malfunctioning macOS with fresh copies.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Enter macOS Recovery.
  2. Click Reinstall macOS followed by Continue.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall macOS.

The above steps don’t erase your Mac. If your Mac still won’t boot up after the reinstallation, considering erasing your startup disk and then reinstall macOS.

You can run data recovery in Recovery Mode to recover files.
