Even though I have 990MB available (a quick glance at my HD indicates 1.22GB? ), this warning continues coming up. I’m not placing any files, but the free space keeps on. iTunes is located on an external drive. This is using Sierra 10.12.6 with 24GB RAM on a mid-2010 Mac Pro. I would appreciate any advice.
The free space on your Macintosh HD is so little for the OS to perform normally. It is advised that the operating system requires a minimum of 5–10 GB of additional space to operate effectively during regular use. And obviously, the available free space on your Mac is less than that requirement, so it triggers the error message “Your disk is almost full.”

When you receive the “Your disk is almost full error” on your Mac, you should check the storage on your Mac and free up disk space on Macintosh HD. Neither 990MB nor 1.22GB is sufficient for the operating system to function well.
Here are some common solutions you can apply:
- Use Mac’s built-in storage management feature
- Empty the Trash
- Clear storage used by Virtual Machine
- Delete duplicate files, manage large files, etc.
- Delete browser data
- Remove application &system logs
- Clean up iTunes backups
- Uninstall unwanted apps
