The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely | File system verify or repair failed

I was force to update my 2012 MacBook Pro to connect my Mac to iTunes. But the update failed, and my MacBook now loads halfway and crashes. I then entered macOS Recovery with Command +.R and ran First Aid on every item listed on the left. All are complete with success except for Macintosh HD. When repairing it with First Aid, it says, "First Aid process has failed. If possible back up the data on this volume. Press done to continue. The Details section says "The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely. File system check exit code is 8. Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required. File system verify or repair failed. Operation failed." How can I fix it?

The failed macOS update has likely caused serious file system corruption on your internal hard drive. Hence, the volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely. I suggest you back up data on your Mac and reinstall macOS.

Simply reinstalling macOS without erasing your Mac won't cause data loss but it's best to secure your data first, as the installation may fail, in which case, reformatting may be necessary.

After your data is recovered, follow the steps below to reinstall macOS:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Press the power button, then immediately hold down Command + R.

  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish the installation.
