macOS upgrade fails with "The installer resources were not found"

I want to upgrade my MacBook Pro but keep receiving this error “macOS could not be installed on your computer. Ther installer resources were not found. Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again.” The only option I have is to click the Restart button. Can somebody helps me resolve the issue or revert to a previous version of macOS?

What’s your Mac currently like? Can you go back to the desktop?

If you can, delete the installer from your Applications folder, then redownload it via Ethernet and run the installer again.

If you can’t go to the login screen, try to boot up from the startup disk selection screen.

  1. Turn off your Mac.
  2. Press the power button and immediately press and hold the Option key until you see the startup disk options.
  3. Select your start disk and click the up arrow to boot your Mac.

If the reboot guides you back to the error screen, reinstall macOS from Recovery Mode. Here’s how:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Turn it on and immediately press down the Command + R keys.
  3. Let go of the keys when you see the Apple logo.
  4. In the Utilities window, click “Reinstall macOS” and tap Continue.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to reinstall the system.

I think the guy above pretty much covers all the solutions. If a reinstall doesn’t do the magic, I guess you’ll have to erase the internal hard drive for a fresh install.

This, unfortunately, will remove all data on your Mac. If you have a Time Machine backup, don’t hesitate to try it out. If not, run data recovery in Recovery Mode to restore the important files first. Then take the steps below to clean install macOS:

  1. Boot into macOS Recovery. (The previous reply has the details.)
  2. Select “Disk Utility” and click Continue.
  3. At the Disk Utility window, find View > Show All Devices to show the internal disk.
  4. Select the top-level physical internal disk and click Erase.
  5. Name your drive Macintosh HD.
  6. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) if the most recent macOS installed on your Mac is macOS Sierra or earlier; if it’s macOS High Sierra or later, select APFS.
  7. Make sure the scheme is GUID Partition Map.
  8. Click Erase.
  9. Once the erase process is complete, close the window and reinstall macOS.
