Mac Frozen, First Aid Shows File System Verify or Repair Failed

My Mac was frozen a few minutes ago, and I was forced to shut it down by pressing the power button. Now when I boot it up, it can’t find the Mac system partition and shows a forbidden sign. (P.S. I also have Windows 10 installed through Boot Camp.)

Fortunately, I got another hard drive with macOS installed. I booted from this drive and found Macintosh HD is not mounted, and can’t be opened. I tried running First Aid but it failed. The message says “File system verify or repair failed. Operation failed.”

This Mac partition has important files. I would like to get them back even if I can’t boot from it anymore. Any help is appreciated!

You can recover the files from Recovery Mode with data recovery software. Once your files are secured, erase your Mac and reinstall macOS.

The forbidden sign symbolizes that no system is installed or the installed system doesn’t work. By erasing the internal hard drive and reinstalling the system, you can get a working system again.

If a reinstall doesn’t resolve the issue, your internal hard drive is likely physically broken and needs to be replaced.
