iMac Reads/Writes slow, should I replace the HDD or any other options?

My 27-inch 2013 iMac’s read/write speeds, as measured by the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, didn’t exceed 20 Mb/s. Because even Safari takes a very long time to open, this makes the iMac essentially useless.

We’ve seen a lot of login problems lately when the password would not be accepted. “Macintosh HD is OK” was the state of the First Aid test after we contacted support. Next, we reinstalled the most recent version of macOS and fully reset the iMac. Nothing changed as it still takes a very long time to switch on and the read/write speeds are still below 20 MB/s.

I’m fairly certain that the HDD is to blame for every issue we’ve experienced recently with the iMac. Do you believe the issue might be resolved by changing out the 1TB HDD for a 1TB SSD? Or what other choices am I left with?

The iMac’s Apple Care has already expired, and for 499€ (about 600$), I’ve heard businesses offer to swap out the HDD with a 1TB SSD.

The performance of the iMac HDD degrades after use for many years. To avoid potential data loss disaster, it is suggested to upgrade your iMac HDD. If you want to boost up the read/write speed before you make the decision for the new SSD, you can boot the Mac from an external hard drive, to use an external disk with macOS installed as the startup disk.

To upgrade your Mac HDD without data loss, you need to back up/clone the original internal drive first. There are a few ways you can choose, Time Machine, disk image, or a third-party disk cloner for Mac such as iBoysoft DiskGeeker for Mac. The last is the easiest way to quickly clone the HDD to the new SSD.
