I have connected my external hard disk to a Windows computer. Now, when I try to connect it to my MacBook, it says “WD Drive Unlock will damage your computer. You should eject the disk”.
But it is still working fine when I access the disk back from the Windows computer.
How can I get it to work from my MacBook without losing any stored data? (Note it is not formatted yet.)
Many thanks in advance.
Hey there! Sorry to hear you’re having trouble with your external hard drive. I guess you have to check the file system first, because it can be used normally on Windows but not on macOS.
The drive might be using a file system that’s not fully compatible with macOS, such as NTFS. You could use a third-party application like iBoysoft NTFS for Mac or Paragon NTFS for Mac to read and write NTFS drives on a Mac.
No worries, we can get your external hard drive working on your MacBook! Here are some tips:
- Access files to avoid data loss. The message indicates that there is something wrong with your external drive, so you have to copy all the files on your Windows or do a data recovery on macOS. iBoysoft Data Recovery for Mac has powerful scanning skills and data rescue algorithms.
- Disable the drive encryption on Windows.
- Allow apps to download from anywhere.
If the drive’s contents aren’t critical, consider formatting it.

Good luck, and hope you get it sorted!
Sometimes, macOS gets a bit paranoid about external drives. Try adjusting your security settings to see if that helps. Or could you please backup all files and then reformat it to be compatible with macOS?
I don’t want to reformat it…I will backup it first, thanks.
Yep, I think I will recover all the data then fix it, thank you
Okay, it’s not the NTFS file system. Thank you.
