How Can I Clone a Clean MacBook Pro and Use the Clone to Restore a Messy iMac?

I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro. The iMac is messy (leftover files from improperly deleted apps), while the MacBook Pro is clean and well-organized.

So, I want to make the iMac a clean clone of the MacBook Pro.

Here are the steps I’m going to proceed with:

  1. Use a new external hard drive to back up important files from the iMac first
  2. Create a bootable clone of the MacBook Pro
  3. Erase the iMac’s hard drive
  4. Restore the MacBook Pro clone onto the iMac

I want to know whether anyone has done a similar task? Can I do it successfully?

Yep, you can absolutely do this — I’ve done something similar when migrating to a cleaner setup.

Your plan is basically correct, just tighten it a bit:

  • Back up anything important from the iMac (sounds like you’re already doing this :+1:)
  • Use a cloning tool to make a bootable clone of your MacBook Pro onto the external drive
  • Test it: reboot the iMac while holding Option (⌥) and make sure it can boot from that external clone
  • Once confirmed, open Disk Utility (from Recovery Mode ideally), erase the iMac’s internal drive
  • Then restore the clone to the iMac’s internal drive using the same cloning tool

If everything checks out, your iMac will basically become a copy of your MacBook Pro.

I don’t suggest you clone your Mac just to make it cleaner. The cloning process always has different troubles and is time-consuming.

Why not use a cleaning tool? Keeping a Mac tidy is a long-term task.

I often use the Mac cleaner - iBoysoft Cleaner to help me scan my system junk and delete it with one click. Easy, quick, and secure, as this tool can help me classify the files by type for quick browsing and deletion.
