Long-time Mac user here, but there’s one thing that still baffles me daily: why doesn’t macOS let me “Cut” files from the right-click menu?
When organizing files in Finder (e.g., sorting photos/docs between folders), I’m used to right-click → Cut → Paste like on Windows. But on my Mac, I have to:
Cmd+C to copy;
Cmd+Option+V to ‘move’ the file (which 90% of new users don’t know!)
Sometimes manually delete the original if I forget the shortcut.
Feel like I was in 1999 , tired of dragging files over and over again. So can I move files to some file path directly? Or is there a hidden Terminal trick to add Cut to the right-click menu?
Coming from Windows, I totally get your frustration! The lack of “Cut” in Finder drove me nuts at first.
Commonly, you can use the keyboard shortcuts, drag and drop, or Finder file menu to realize how to Move Files on Mac without copying.
Select file > Cmd+C > Navigate to target folder > Cmd+Option+V (this moves the file, no duplicates!).
Open the window, then drag and drop.
Right-click the file and choose Copy > Open the destination folder and right-click on the blank space, press the Option key and select Move Item Here.
So terrible things: Accidental file moving, busy with mouse, keyboard, and shortcuts. Besides cutting files in the right-click menu, iBoysoft MagicMenu can move files to the frequently-accessed folders to your context menu.
