Accidentally Erased HDD on iMac with Dual Boot, Can I Recover Lost Data?

My iMac was dual-booting macOS and Windows. While trying to resize the Windows partition in Recovery Mode, I accidentally erased the HDD.

I want to recover the data without removing the drive. I’ve tried creating two bootable USB drives, but neither will boot on his iMac.

Is it possible to recover data from an iMac using a bootable USB drive?

There’s no other solution except for taking the Mac’s internal drive out. Since Mac data recovery software doesn’t support NTFS, you have to use a Windows data recovery tool.

In that case, you should take out the internal disk, connect it to a Windows PC, and then run a Windows data recovery tool to recover the files on the Windows partition.

I experienced such tricky trouble a few years ago and used iBoysoft Data Recovery for Windows to get back files on the erased Windows partition on the HDD.

Notably, stop using the HDD. Overwritten will make the erased data impossible to be recovered.

Here are my steps:

  1. Placing the HDD taken from the Mac in an external hard drive enclosure.
  2. Connect the drive to a Windows computer.
  3. Download iBoysoft Data Recovery for Windows, install and open it.
  4. Select Data Recovery.
  5. Select the connected drive and click Next to start scanning files on it.
  6. Preview the files and recover them to your PC.
