TextEdit doesn't save files: "The file "Untitled.txt" couldn't be opened."

Every time I save a file in TextEdit, it gives me the error “The file “Untitled.txt” couldn’t be opened.” I’m trying to save the text file to my desktop but am unable to. This is making me mad. Can someone help please?

I had a similar experience with the error “The document Untitled could not be saved as “xxxx” . The file doesn’t exist.” The solution is to use the Save button and browse to Macintosh HD before choosing the location.

  1. Open the file you want to save.
  2. Click the Save button.
  3. When the Save dialogue shows up, navigate backward to the top level of your Mac, usually called Macintosh HD.
  4. Click on the top level, then browse to the folder where you actually want to save the document.
  5. Click Save.
