SD card uses space but no content on Mac

I plugged my SD card, which has 12GB of content on it, into my iMac. It appeard fine but when I tried to copy the files, it wouldn’t let me. All of a sudden, the SD card turned empty and all the files are gone. I then checked Get Info and found the SD card still holds 12 GB of data. I also tried to eject it but got a message saying “The disk wasn’t ejected because one or more programs may be using it.” How can I get back the disappeared files from the SD card on Mac?

Have you tried a reboot? Consider shutting down your Mac, unplugging the SD card, then rebooting and inserting the SD card into your Mac again to see if the files show up.

Since the used space didn’t change, the files should still be on the SD card. Try holding down Command-Shift-. to reveal hidden files. If this keyboard shortcut doesn’t work, download iBoysoft Data Recovery for Mac to recover the lost files.

This tool can restore lost or disappeared files from any brand of SD cards effectively, supporting videos, images, audio, documents, and more file formats.
