New SSD Not Recognized in Disk Utility after Replacing the Old One

After replacing a non-functional old SSD with a new one on my MacBook Pro 2017 (model A1708) running macOS 10.12 Sierra, the new internal SSD doesn’t appear in the list of disks in Disk Utility when booted into Recovery Mode (using Command-R).

There’s only one partition called ''OS X Base System" with 2.01GB of capacity and an external physical disk called “Apple disk image media” with only 2.14 GB of capacity.

Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Here are the possible causes:

  • The SSD requires using macOS 10.13 and above;
  • The SSD is not working;
  • The SSD was not the part that failed.

I suggest you try a different SSD that supports macOS 10.12 Sierra.

It seems the new SSD is not detected on your MacBook Pro. If you’re certain that the old SSD is indeed the issue why your Mac was malfunctioning, try a different and compatible SSD.
