I’d like my Windows PC to restart when I tell it to, not restart automatically when there’s an update. The reason is that when my computer restarts, I lose a lot of information that I can’t get back. Not everything is the sort of thing that can be saved. For example, I have programs I leave open so they can do tasks that sometimes involve sending me alerts. If I’m away from my computer, I can look at these alerts when I get back, and take action accordingly. If my computer restarts, I lose those alerts and cannot do my work properly. Although restart is necessary especially when there is an update going, I am the one who always restarts the machine as if there is any update available at my convenience. So how can I disable the automatic restart to ensure the program runs properly in the background?
Windows always restarts your machine to ensure the new update processes well and the newly available feature or enhancement works well, additionally, it isolates every unnecessary or disturbing factor that may lag the update. If you’re tired of the times of restarts especially when you’re busy with some tasks, you can prevent the automatic restarts here:
Use Windows settings to disable the automatic restarts:
Open “Settings” by pressing the Windows key + I.
Go to “Update & Security” > “Windows Update.”
Click on “Advanced options.”
Under “Pause updates,” toggle the switch to enable “Pause until” and set a date in the future.
Finally, under “Restart options” toggle the switch to disable “Automatically restart.”
Launch Group Policy editor to stop the automatic restarts on Windows:
Open the Group Policy Editor by pressing the Window key and typing “gpedit.msc”, then press Enter.
Expand “Computer Configuration”, then “Administrative Templates”.
Expand “Windows Components”, followed by “Windows Update.”
Double-click on the “No auto-restart with logged-on users for scheduled automatic updates installations” policy.
Select “Enabled” and click “OK.”
Run PowerShell to disable the automatic restarts on Windows:
Open PowerShell as an administrator.
To disable automatic restarts for Windows Update, run the following command:
Set-ItemProperty -Path HKLM:\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU -Name “NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers” -Value 1
Choose one way you like to stop your machine from automatic restarts after the update, and then you can concentrate on your own business. One more thing to say, please keep regular backups of your vital files and system settings to avoid data loss during updates or system changes. Backing up vital data guarantees that users may retrieve their files and preferences if the system crashes or restarts unexpectedly.
