An IT guy told me that I can drag and drop the contents of an external hard drive I want to copy over to a new formatted external drive. Then I noticed that some one suggesting clone one drive to another using the Restore function of Disk Utility. Which one is correct?
Both are correct. You can drag and drop or clone the contents of one external hard drive to another on Mac to make a backup. However, if the volume or disk contains an operating system, it must be cloned.
If that’s your case, use the Restore function of Disk Utility. Or better, use iBoysoft DiskGeeker for Mac to clone the drive to another. This tool makes an one-on-one copy of the source drive, helping you quickly get the job done.
