How do I get rid of the uninitialized asterisk partition on external hard drive?

I just can’t remove the uninitialized 0kb asterisk partition from my external hard drive, can I? I’ve tried to delete this partition and increase the main partition and everything, but it’s not going away. I really want to format my external hard drive completely and delete it for good.

You need to format the physical drive. If you work on the partition level, you’re certain to fail.

How do I do this exactly? Please offer more details.

Try these to delete the 0KB asterisk partition:

  1. Open Disk Utility.
  2. Click View > Show All Devices. (This will reveal the physical disk, which is usually labeled with the manufacturer’s name.)
  3. Select the physical disk. (e.g., Toshiba USB media)
  4. Click the Erase button.
  5. Name your drive.
  6. Choose the format you want.
  7. Keep the scheme as GUID Partition Map.
  8. Click Erase.
Now, the uninitialized asterisk partition should be gone.
