Files Suddenly Disappeared from External Hard Drive? Why

My external hard drive has about 2 GB of data. I saw them there last week when I connected the drive to my MacBook Pro. From then on, I never used my drive. However, I connected the external drive to my MBP this morning and accessed the drive. I saw nothing. Where are my files?

Are you sure no one else has used your drive? It seems that the data are deleted rather than “missing by itself.”

Try pressing Command-Shift-. (the period key) together. This key combination is used to show the hidden files on a Mac.

You can open your external hard drive on your Mac and press this key combination to see if any files appear.

If nothing appears, I recommend you use iBoysoft Data Recovery for Mac. This tool can help you search for files ever been stored on your external drive, as long as they haven’t been overwritten.

  1. Free download iBoysoft Data Recovery for Mac and install and open it on your Mac.
  2. Select your external hard drive from the app’s main interface and click Search for Lost Data.
  3. After scanning, you can check your files by type, select those you want, preview them, and click Recover to save them to a different destination.
