I used Disk Utility to restore HD to another HD and an SSD but it didn’t work. The log shows: Restoring “Mac HD6” from “Mac HD” Validating target… Validating source… Validating sizes… Restoring Verifying Inverting target volume… APFS inverter failed to invert the volume - Invalid argument The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error 22.) Operation failed…Is there something I can do to fix it into a bootable clone or is this a bug in the app? I tried it with both Mac OS 10.14.4 and 10.14.5. It seems odd that Apple created a tool that didn’t work.
Actually, the destination drive should be bigger than the source one indicating the whole drive space, but not the used space. Specifically, for example, even though you use 200GB of 1TB space, the destination drive should be bigger than 1TB but not the space used for 200 GB. That’s why you run into failure. Facing this, you’d try a hard drive with space bigger than the source drive you use to clone the operating system.
As for the OS clone, you’re recommended to run iBoysoft DiskGeeker for Mac which clones the whole hard drive with ease!
