Last week, I updated two important Excel spreadsheets. When I opened them today, they only show the older versions. The recent changes are gone. I’m worried I closed them without saving.
Is there any way on a Mac to recover an Excel file that was edited but not saved before closing?
Excel AutoRecover folder
Open Finder → Go (top menu) → Go to Folder → paste:
~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Excel/Data/Library/Preferences/AutoRecovery
See if there’s a recent AutoRecovered version.
Version History (if saved to OneDrive or iCloud)
If the file was stored in OneDrive and AutoSave was on, open the file → File → Browse Version History.
Temporary files
Sometimes Excel creates temp files starting with ~$ in the same folder.
If the file was stored locally and you closed it without saving and AutoRecover didn’t capture it, then sadly, there’s usually no way to restore those unsaved edits.
