Apps Taking Too Much Space on MacBook

When I check About My Mac, it says Apps takes up 88 GB of space. Yet when I right-click the Applications folder, it only uses about 10 GB of storage space. I have 47 apps installed, but most of them are pre-installed system apps.

Why the inconsistency?

My MacBook Air also shows similar space inconsistency. The storage overview tells me Apps consumes 46GB of storage but Get Info only shows 16 GB.

Your Mac may have an index problem. Try reindexing your Mac with the following steps:

  1. Go to System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy or System Settings > Spotlight > Search Privacy.
  2. Click the Add button.
  3. Select your internal disk, Macintosh HD, and click Choose.
  4. Wait a few seconds, then select the internal disk and remove it.
  5. Spotlight will begin reindexing your Mac.
  6. After it’s done, check the storage overview again.

I think Disk Utility shows more accurate storage information. Open Disk Utility, then select your internal hard drive to find the Used and Free storage space.
