Applied macOS Update on External Disk: Files on This Drive Are Gone!

My Mac is running out of internal space, so I installed the update on an external hard disk. Now, the files on the external disk are missing. I used a trial data recovery tool and found that they still exist. How can I get them back?

The files are not deleted but are hidden from access. Follow the steps below to view them:

  1. Open Disk Utility.
  2. Find a section of the hard drive called “Other Volumes.”
  3. Right-click to see this section in Finder.
  4. Type Command + Shift + . to reveal the hidden files.
  5. Open Volumes.
  6. Find the missing files.
