64GB microSD card not readable on Mac

When I insert my microSD card into my MacBook Pro, it says “The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.” It’s a 64GB microSD card formatted with Sony NEX5 camera. It has a few GBs of photos and videos I want to save on my Mac. I can still see the files on the camera. I’ve tried different adapters, card readers, USB cables, but the result is the same. I even tried my old XP PC with no luck. This is a FAT32 card. Please help me get it to work on Mac.

If your SD card is formatted in FAT32, it should be compatible with macOS. If not, it’s likely corrupted.

I know you can’t find the SD card on the desktop or in Finder’s sidebar because it’s not mounted. But you can still find it in Disk Utility, although it’s grayed out.

In my point of view, the best way to fix your SD card is to recover its data and reformat it.

Step 1: Download iBoysoft Data Recovery for Mac to get back your files. (This tool allows you to preview files before recovery for free.)

Step 2: Format the SD card

  1. Open Disk Utility.
  2. Click View > Show All Devices.
  3. Select the physical disk of your SD card, which usually contains the brand of the manufacturer.
  4. Click Erase.
  5. Name it.
  6. Choose FAT32 as the format.
  7. Keep the default scheme.
  8. Click Erase.
