2020 M1 MacBook Not Recognizing ORICO M234C3-U4 External SSD

My 2020 M1 MacBook (7-core GPU, 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM) won’t recognize an ORICO M234C3-U4 external SSD, which is formatted in exFAT.

The SSD doesn’t show up when I run diskutil list in Terminal but it does appear in System Report under Hardware > Thunderbolt/USB4.

I’ve tried the following fixes to no avail:

  • Boot into Safe Mode
  • Change cables or ports
  • Factory reset the MacBook twice

This SSD works normally on my Windows desktop. How do I make it work in my Mac?

It seems that your Mac detects the SSD but doesn’t recognize it.

Try backing up your external drive and reformatting it on your Windows PC with exFAT or FAT32. Then connect it to your Mac to see if it works properly.

Did you connect the SSD through an adapter? If so, connect it to your Mac directly!
