My external hard drive becomes uninitialized, how can I extract the data?

My WD My Passport shows up as unknown and not initialized in Windows. What might have happened is that the drive damaged after the power went out unexpectedly the last time I used it. The disk was NTFS when it was working. I really need a solution to these as the data on the disk is irreplaceable and I don't have any backups or copies. Thanks for your help.

If you want to extract data from your uninitialized WD My Passport, you can try professional data recovery software - iBoysoft Data Recovery for Windows to get data off. After recovering your data, you can proceed to fix the uninitialized and unknown external drive to make it usable again.

Here is how to recover data from an uninitialized drive with iBoysoft Data Recovery for Windows:

Step 1. Download and install iBoysoft Data Recovery for Windows on your computer.

Step 2. Connect the faulty WD My Passport to your PC and launch the recovery software.

Step 3. Select the Data Recovery module on the main interface.

Step 4. Click Find More Partitions at the bottom, select your uninitialized drive and click Next to search for lost partitions.

Step 5. Select the found partition and click Next to scan for lost/deleted files.

Step 6. Right-click the scanned result and choose Preview to check whether the file is intact.

Step 7. Tick the box of the wanted files and choose Recover to save them to a different location.

When the drive is not initialized, you can not read and write data to it, the external hard drive is inaccessible. Such a state usually happens to a new shipped-out drive. But, drive corruption, bad sectors, and other reasons can also make your in-use drive uninitialized, then your data is at risk. Therefore, you should recover data from the not initialized drive first and then fix it to make the drive readable and writable again.
