Can I save anything from my corrupted SD card? How do I prevent this in the future?

I took my SD card and transferred all of the shots to my computer and then formatted the card. Today I went out did some shooting and went to put them onto my computer as well, but none of the photos would open up, it says the file format is not supported, and I cannot transfer them with an error saying that the file formats couldn't transfer over. What should I do to recover them and prevent this in the future? Any help would be much appreciated.
