Boot Camp error: Unable to read the Windows partition

I was trying to install Windows on my Mac, but after I clicked the first Continue button on Boot Camp Assistant, it gives me an error message: "Unable to read the Windows partition. Boot Camp Assistant was unable to verify if the Windows partition contains a Windows installation. This may be because BitLocker is enabled on the partition. If so, disable BitLocker on the disk before removing Boot Camp." How can I get past it?

When Boot Camp shows the error "Unable to read the Windows partition," you can remove the Windows partition and recreate it.

The easiest way to remove the Windows partition is by relaunching Boot Camp Assistant and clicking Continue > Remove/Restore. If it doesn't work, try the following steps:

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Run the command below to list all partitions on your Mac and note down the disk identifier of your Windows partition. (e.g., disk1s3)diskutil listThe Boot Camp partition is usually part of your internal, physical drive and is labeled as Microsoft Basic Data. If there's another Bootcamp partition, such as a synthesized APFS Volume Bootcamp partition, you need to delete it first by following steps 3 and 4. Otherwise, head straight to step 5.
  3. Find the UUID of the extra Boot Camp partition.diskutil apfs list
  4. Delete the volume. (e.g., diskutil apfs deleteVolume CBA9456F-E2U6-4780-B6CC-E8603DA0FE71)diskutil apfs deleteVolume UUID
  5. Erase the Windows partition.  diskutil eraseVolume fat32 BOOTCAMP disk_identifier
  6. Run Boot Camp again to reinstall Windows.
