What is format?

Format refers to an initialization operation performed to a disk to make it available for data storage. When you format a disk, the Operating System erases all bookkeeping information on the disk, tests the disk to make sure all sectors are reliable, marks bad sectors, and creates internal address tables that later used to locate information.

But there is no need to get panic for that formatting a partition only erases the address table, doesn't erase the data itself. Therefore, data can be recovered from formatted partition and hard drive at most of the time.

Format is divided into two types: Quick Format and Full Format. You should pay attention to that lost data is able to be recovered after Full Format in Windows XP and Quick Format in Windows Vista/7/8/10/XP, but cannot be recovered after Full Format in Windows Vista/7/8/10 as Windows would erase the data completely (write zero). Fortunately, the default option is Quick Format.
